Boone NC becomes a winter wonderland during the winter months. On average, we see natural snowfall totals averaging about 35 inches per winter. It’s really not all that unusual to see blizzard conditions when you travel to our historic bed and breakfast Boone NC, Lovill House Inn. Boone is conveniently located very close to several great skiing resorts. The Boone ski areas are: Appalachian Ski Mountain, Sugar Mountain Ski Resort, and Beech Mountain Ski Resort. Boone’s elevation is 3,333 feet making it the ideal place to stay for a ski vacation. Many couples and others love to come up during snowstorms because the ski conditions are usually the best during those times.
If you do come up during a time when it is snowing, you’ll appreciate that we are right off of a main stretch of highway that receives a great deal of attention with regards to being scraped. You should ideally have all wheel drive or four wheel drive to drive around certain areas of the High Country during those heavy snowfall periods, however, our bed and breakfast Boone NC is wonderfully located in a cozy spot on roads that are very well maintained. Of course, you can always tell your friends you are ‘snowed in’ if you wish though, because the area will be blanketed with beautiful white snowflakes. If you plan to travel to the nearby Boone ski areas of App Ski Mountain, Sugar Mountain, or Beech Mountain you’ll want to have the proper vehicle. It isn’t advised to drive on bad tires, or try to drive a rear wheeled drive car without some type of chains.
Appalachian Ski Mountain is just a short drive away, by way of King Street then take a right at the stoplight at the intersection with Highway 105 Extension. At the bottom of the hill, at the intersection with Highway 321 Blowing Rock Road, take a left, and follow all the way out of Boone, to Blowing Rock, and turn right at the light for Appalachian Ski Mountain and follow the road all the way to the top of the mountain where the ski lodge is located. The resort features some great slopes for beginners and kids of all ages as well as a really nice terrain park. There is also a skating rink.
Sugar Mountain is easily found as well. Just take King Street to the stoplight at the intersection with Highway 105 Extension, and then turn right onto 105 Extension. At the bottom of the hill at the intersection with Blowing Rock Road, go straight towards Linville and Banner Elk. Drive all the way to Banner Elk at the Tynecastle intersection and light and take a right. Follow until you see the sign for Sugar Mountain on the left of the highway. Sugar Mountain is a family favorite and features slopes and a snow tubing area. The views are incredible from atop this mountain.
Beech Mountain is the highest elevated town East of the Mississippi and it’s worth a visit if you love skiing. The views are phenomenal. The ski resort features slopes, tubing and an ice skating rink.
