The Boone Area Wine Trail leads through some scenic areas of the High Country and lead to some sophisticated wineries. Appalachian State has a thriving viticulture program, and the heart of the High Country is filled with wonderful benefits from that. Nearby wineries, Grandfather Vineyards and the Banner Elk Winery have both won prestigious awards and are worth a trip.

Lovill House Inn and Spring House Cottage are a short drive from all of these great wineries near Boone NC. To travel to Foscoe where you’ll find Grandfather Vineyards, take a right out of Old Bristol, then hit 105 Bypass by turning left. Come to the light at Hwy 105 and Hwy 105 Bypass, and take a right and head down Hwy 105, past Broadstone Road and the turn off for Valle Crucis (on the right), and keep going until you see the sign for Grandfather Vineyard & Winery right about the same time you see a 2nd great view of Grandfather Mountain’s profile. Check out the tasting room and sample some of the winery’s seven wines including-Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Rose, a wine called “Big Boulder Red,” and a blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Gris named “Terraced Gold. Open-Thursday through Saturday noon to 6 pm and Sunday 1 pm to 5 pm. A flight of tastings costs $5 and comes with a souvenir glass. Tel: 828-963-2400
The Banner Elk Winery is located at 60 Deer Run, Banner Elk, NC 28604 Phone:(828) 898-9090. It’s easily accessibly from downtown Banner Elk if you make the trip. The scenic views along the way are spectacular.
