Boone is a mountain paradise tucked away in western North Carolina. Here you will find countless outdoor pursuits and scenic beauty like no other place. We are situated in the Blue Ridge Mountains in a region commonly called, “The High Country” due to its elevations. Boone’s elevation is 3,333 feet and surrounding communities are even higher (Beech Mountain has an elevation of 5,505 feet).

Many are shocked to find out how close they really are to the mountains in Boone NC. The Boone Tourism and Development Authority / Chamber of Commerce have put together a fun map showing you how close your adventure might be.¬†Greensboro and Charlotte are just 2 hours away, Greenville, SC, Durham, and Knoxville are all just a short 2.5 hour drive. Columbia and Raleigh are about 3 hours away, and the cities of Wilmington, Charleston, and Atlanta are around 4.5 hours away. We are a quick escape for most southeastern communities. Boone, North Carolina was once a hub of the area now known as the High Country. At the end of the 19th century, Boone was a central location between several very popular vacation spots that were designated for wealthy business people in cities and towns across the southeast. As Linville, Blowing Rock, and Banner Elk flourished and served as a summer residence for these families, the region continued to grow.Around the same point in time, Appalachian State University was founded as Appalachian State Teachers College, to educate teachers in the state. This institution has ensured that the area will continue to grow exponentially.

Visitors the area describe the beauty as not unlike the views and scenery surrounding the much more well known, Asheville. However, our region is not nearly as populated, and not overly developed towards tourism. We have watched happily as Boone has slowly grown into the town that it is today.
