The Moses Cone Mansion and Estate, or Flat Top Manor as it is known locally is a beautiful estate home located along the Blue Ridge Parkway at Milepost 294. Today, it houses the Parkway Craft Center which features works of folk art and crafts from local and area renowned artists and crafters and a nice visitor information section where you can usually speak with a park ranger. The home is the centerpiece of the extending Moses H. Cone Memorial Park which features some 3,600 acres that were once the playgrounds of the Cone family. Here you’ll find many horse and carriage trails, hiking routes and lovely ponds for fishing. Many visitors that stay with us and enjoy Lodging in Boone NC at the Lovill House Inn like to stop by this location on the Blue Ridge Parkway.
The Moses Cone Mansion was built by Moses H. Cone and his wife Bertha at the turn of the twentieth century. Cone built the house to serve as a family country retreat in the mountains, and he emulated George Vanderbilt who built the Biltmore Estate in nearby Asheville, North Carolina. Built in the Victorian Neo-Colonial and Colonial Revival Style the home has large white columns, glass windows and dormers found at the top of the house. It featured all sorts of modern day conveniences including telephones, gaslights, a central heating system and a bowling alley. Bertha and other family members loved art and furnished the home in fine furnishings and works of art.
The estate property featured apple tree orchards, a horse stable and a guest house. Today, the home and grounds of the manor are open to visitors from the springtime thru the fall and it sees some 225,000 visitors annually. Horseback riding companies also use the carriage trails for horseback riding. It is an awe-inspiring location to stop when you drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway. Visitors looking for gifts and keepsakes will love the Parkway Craft Center housed inside which is operated by the Southern Highland Craft Center.
