Valle Crucis is a destination that feels like it’s another world away, yet it is tucked right off of Highway 105 about 15 minutes from our historic bed and breakfast in Boone NC, Lovill House Inn. One of the earliest established communities in the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina, this rural community has remained largely untouched for hundreds of years. It is worth the short trip if you are looking for scenic beauty or are interested in some of the best fly fishing in the country.
The area is named for three streams that form the shape of a St. Andrew’s cross, and was settled in the early 1840’s by Episcopal missionaries, the most famous being Levi Silliman Ives, who was responsible for coming up with the name. He founded a number of significant establishments to the Episcopal church including, the first Episcopal church in the region, “Easter Chapel”, as well as the Valle Crucis Mission School which is now the Valle Crucis Conference & Retreat Center. Uniquely, the also founded the first monastic order within the Episcopal Church in the United States, the Brotherhood of the Holy Cross. Holy Cross Episcopal Church is the direct successor to Easter Chapel and was built-in 1926. The building itself is one of countless buildings of significance, and was designed to resemble a medieval monastery in Wales.
Other places of interest in Valle Crucis are the original Mast General Store and Mast Farm, the Lucy Mast Olsen House, Taylor tobacco barn, Farthing Store, C.D. Squire Taylor House, and Valle Crucis Bank. Watauga River Road, just off of Highway 194, or Broadstone Road, is a wonderful spot to enjoy fishing, and the Valle Crucis Community Park located right in the heart of the community, just near the Mast General Store’s Candy Barrel, is a spot for public fishing (with a valid N.C. fishing license, of course). The community park is a great spot to stretch your legs and take in the scenery. It’s a flat, riverfront park where festivals such as the Valle Crucis Park Auction are hosted. Another popular event, the Valle Country Fair, takes place in the field across from the Apple Barn.
