The Appalachian mountains are full of history and heritage. At the Lovill House Inn Boone NC Bed and Breakfast, we get a lot of visitors who are here for the history, and we love hearing stories of their travel. One of the many draws to the area is the amount of Scottish history and celebrations. Down the road a few miles, in Banner Elk, the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games are held each year in the middle of July.
This year, the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games will be held July 12th through July 15th, beginning with a whisky tasting. Food and concessions will be available all weekend at MacRae Meadows, but you are welcome to bring your own. You will see traditional Scottish entertainment all year, including Celtic music, dancing, sheep herding, and more. There is so much to be seen and experienced that you can’t go wrong with just walking around the games.
The most entertaining parts of the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games include athletic competition, piping competitions, drumming competitions, dancing competitions, harp competitions, and fiddling competitions. Not to mention the two major races, The Bear: Assault on Grandfather and the Mountain Marathon, beginning in Boone NC. The Bear is a five mile footrace, climbing over 1,500 feet in elevation from Linville to the summit of Grandfather Mountain. Athletes and spectators alike cheer as the runners circle the track at the Highland Games, and begin the ascent to the peak of the mountain.
If you are staying at our Boone NC Bed and Breakfast during that weekend, be sure to head up to Grandfather Mountain to witness this epic display of Scottish history, heritage, and the battling of the clans.
